Oriental Land Co., the operator of the Tokyo Disney Resort, said they may work with the Walt Disney Company on the planned Shanghai Disney Park.
During an interview at Oriental Land Company's headquarters in Chiba, OLC's Executive Director, Akiyoshi Yokota announced there is a chance they will cooperate with Disney on the Shanghai venture. No details have been released, but Yokota said they have been talking and exchanging information with Disney.
The Walt Disney Co. won Chinese government approval for a theme park in Shanghai that has a tentative completion date of 2014. The project will include a Magic Kingdom style theme park with characteristics tailored to the region. This will be the fourth Disney park outside the United States.
Oriental Land Co. happens to be looking to expand their business outside of Japan while trying to attract tourists from China and other countries due to Japan's falling wages and a decrease in domestic spending. This is the perfect opportunity for them to expand into China while working with a familiar company.
Oriental Land Co. operates the Tokyo Disneyland Resort which includes Disneyland, DisneySea, Ambassador Hotel, and the Ikspiari shopping mall. OLC pays royalties to Disney to operate the Tokyo theme parks. Walt Disney Co. (Japan) Ltd. recently acquired Retail Networks Co. and has taken over operations of the Disney Stores in Japan.
